Anyone who has ever heard of Yugioh! knows the name “Exodia.” Who could ever forget how Yugi used this all-powerful monster to obliterate his rival Kaiba! But, who is Exodia? Who and what is this monster and where did it come from? Why is Exodia so powerful? Why are there so many different versions of it, too? Let’s take a look at these questions together and learn more about this immortal behemoth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Forbidden One<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n

So, who is Exodia and where did he come from? Exodia the Forbidden One<\/strong><\/a>, known as simply Exodia, collectively, refers to the five pieces of Exodia – Exodia the Forbidden One<\/a><\/strong>, Left Arm of the Forbidden One<\/a><\/strong>, Right Arm of the Forbidden One<\/a><\/strong>, Left Leg of the Forbidden One<\/a><\/strong>, Right Leg of the Forbidden One<\/a><\/strong>. These five pieces are known as the Forbidden One archetype, which is separate from the Exodia archetype, though they are related. For now, this article will focus on the Forbidden One cards, but will discuss the other forms of Exodia later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obliterate!<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The five pieces of Exodia are legendary in Yugioh! While the look weak on the surface, if you can managed to gather all of the pieces together, you hold the power to instantly win the duel! Both of the arms and both of the legs are simple Normal Monsters, but The Forbidden One himself has this effect: “If you have “Right Leg of the Forbidden One”, “Left Leg of the Forbidden One”, “Right Arm of the Forbidden One” and “Left Arm of the Forbidden One” in addition to this card in your hand, you win the Duel.” Instant win! Even though each of the five pieces is limited to 1 copy each, there are many different strategies dedicated to releasing this sealed sentinel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Origins<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exodia’s origins go all the way back to Pharaoh Aknamkanon and the Sacred Guardians. Exodia was the ka<\/em>, or spirit, of the Sacred Guardian Shimon. Exodia and other ka<\/em> were used to defend the Pharoah and his land. Exodia was so powerful, rumored to have even slain over 1000 men in one night, that Shimon sealed Exodia away in five separate slabs. This is why Exodia is known as the Forbidden One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exodia vs. Necrophades<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n

Zorc Necrophades was the greatest threat to the Pharoah and all of Egypt. When Zorc appeared, Shimon released Exodia. In the manga, Exodia and Zorc battled and Exodia wrestled with the dark foe and ripped his arm off. Zorc scoffed, regenerating his arm and showing off his immortality. Then Zorc did the same to Exodia and ripped off his arm. But, Shimon told Zarc that Exodia, too, was immortal. The Forbidden One then regenerated his arm, too. Zorc refused to believe that Exodia could be immortal. After surviving Exodia’s “Obliterate” attack, Zorc released all of his strength and overpowered the Forbidden one and killed Shimon. This was possible because Necrophades drew from his own endless dark energy while Exodia drew his power from the mortal Shimon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anime Appearances<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the anime, Yugo Muto famously summoned Exodia to defeat Seto Kaiba, this moment being forever immortalized in pop culture. But, Yugi was not the only duelist to use Exodia. The Rare Hunter known as “Seeker” in the anime battled Joey Wheeler with an Exodia deck. In the Japanese anime, Yugi battled the Rare Hunter, and after defeating him, ripped up his Forbidden One cards, as they were counterfeits. But, in the dub, the cards were destroyed because they were marked. In the GX anime, Yubel-possessed Marcel Bonaparte, Adrian Gecko, and Yubel-possessed Jesse Anderson all used Forbidden One cards, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection to Ancient Egypt<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exodia was an important part of the Yugioh! lore, but he is also connected to an important figure in actual ancient Egypt: Osiris. While not confirmed by Konami, the connection between Exodia and Osiris is very popular. In Egyptian mythology, Osiris was the first Pharoah and introduced the ancient Egyptian people to civilization, agriculture, and ancient wisdom. The divine line of the ancient Pharaohs is connected to Osiris. In ancient times, Osiris was Pharaoh, but his brother wanted the throne for himself. In an effort to overthrow his brother, Set dismembered Osiris and spread his body parts across the land. But, Isis, Osiris’ wife, and Isis’ sister Nephthys, traveled across Egypt and recovered the scattered pieces of the once Pharaoh. After his remains were brought back together, Osiris became the king of the underworld, and his son, Horus, would later avenge him and defeat Set. Both Osiris and Exodia were powerful entities who were “dismembered” and scattered to diminish their power. Coincidence or inspiration?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exodia Varriants<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exodia the Forbidden One<\/a><\/strong> is not the only Exodia card. As mentioned before, there are other “Exodia” cards apart from the Forbidden One archetype. There is an entire archetype often called “Millennium” or simply just “Exodia” that features the Exodia Fusion Monster The Unstoppable Exodia Incarnate<\/a><\/strong>, a very powerful boss monster.
