One of the major categories or classes of Yugioh! monsters is their Type. This monster feature classifies each monster in a different category based on what kind of monster it is, such as Warrior, Dragon, Spellcaster, Zombie, etc. Yugioh monster Types have evolved over time, and new ones have even added over time. Let’s take a look at the importance of Type!<\/p>\n\n\n

Type or Type?<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Type with a capital “T” is different from type with a lowercase “t”. Lowercase “type” refers to the three major card forms: Spell, Trap, and Monster. Uppercase “Type” is a monster-specific classification that separates each monster into a category based on what that monster is. For example, Red-Eyes Black Dragon<\/a><\/strong> is a Dragon-type monster, or Dark Magician<\/a><\/strong> is a Spellcaster-type monster. This helps separate different monsters from each other and allows for more creativity and card interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

War of the Types<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some Types are much more popular than others. For example, there are somewhere in the area of 900 Fiend monsters currently in the game, but only around 150 Thunder monsters. There are many different reasons for this. Some Types are simply more popular, some are older than others, and some Type-specific archetypes are just larger than others. Just look at how many Warrior archetypes there are, like HERO, Gouki, Nobel Knights, etc. There are well over 1,000 Warrior monsters in the game. But, Illusion monsters a relatively new Type, there are only 50 or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are some monster Types that work best on their own, but there are also many Types that actually work well with each other. Take for example Fiend and Fairy. These two are often seen as rival factions, but they can work well together, such as in Chaos\/Light and Dark decks. Or the ever numerous Aqua\/Sea Serpent\/Fish monsters. These cards, often WATER Attribute, can work very well together and sometimes have support cards that include all of these Types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are tons of cards out there that interact with monster Types. Some cards are designed to help search out Types like Reinforcement of the Army<\/a><\/strong> or Bonfire<\/a><\/strong>. Other cards are designed to stamp out a certain Type, like Last Day of Witch<\/a><\/strong> or Acid Rain<\/a><\/strong>. There are even some cards that can change Type, like Zombie World<\/a><\/strong> or DNA Surgery<\/a><\/strong>. There are also many, many cards that boost the stats of certain types of monsters, often Field Spells like Yami<\/a><\/strong> or Jurassic World<\/a><\/strong>. A few more examples of cards that support specific Types are Magical Dimension<\/a><\/strong>, Masked Dragon<\/a><\/strong>, Aqua Jet<\/a><\/strong>, Plant Food Chain<\/a><\/strong>, Giant Pairfish<\/a><\/strong>…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weird Typings<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While many monster Types just fit certain cards and make total sense, like Red-Eyes and Blue-Eyes being Dragons. But, every now and then a monster is published with a type that makes little to no sense. A good example of this is Doggy Diver<\/a><\/strong>. A fun card featuring a dog in scuba gear. Its a Beast-type, right? Maybe even Aqua? Nope. It’s a Warrior! And not even a WATER Warrior, it’s a DARK monster! Then there is Injection Fairy Lily<\/a><\/strong>. This cute little nurse is surely a Fairy-type, right? Wrong again. She is a Spellcaster! Another classic monster weird type: Hungry Burger<\/a><\/strong>. This monster is literally a hamburger with teeth. It could be a sandwich possessed by a Fiend, or maybe a psychotic Plant or even a Beast, but, no. This one is a Warrior, too!
