Yu-Gi-Oh! is a game full of wizards, warriors, and wyverns, and so many of the classic monsters have interesting and fantastic stories to tell. Buster Blader is one such monster! Released way back in 2000 in the OCG, and 2002 in the TCG, this dragon hunting warrior has a tale to tell, a tale both heroic and tragic.
The Legend of Buster Blader
Buster Blader was a gallant knight, roaming the land and helping those in need. His specialty: slaying dragons. He grew to become so powerful and skilled that he earned the Emblem of Dragon Destroyer. With his new title, he became known as Buster Blader, the Destruction Swordmaster. He gained a noble reputation, and even had his own followers: Skilled White Magician. Of all the dragon hunters, Buster Blader became the best. But something unexpected happened during one fateful battle.
Destruction and Devotion
One fateful day, Buster Blader encountered a great and evil dragon. He was engaged in battle with the beast, when he discovered one of the dragon’s whelps, as seen in the artwork of Prologue of the Destruction Swordsman, the beginning of a legend. The mighty warrior, touched by the baby creature’s innocence, took in the little dragon pup, Buster Whelp of the Destruction Swordsman. He raised the whelp, trained it, and it fought at his side. However, as the pup grew, it changed. It grew into Dragon Buster Destruction Sword, the dark energy inside it increasing. As the darkness within grew stronger, it changed into Wizard Buster Destruction Sword, then Robot Buster Destruction Sword, and then…

Fear and Friendship
The darkness unleashed the dragon within the whelp, and the Buster Dragon was released. The Buster Dragon, once the trusted companion of Buster Blader, was overpowered by it’s draconic instincts and attacked a city. As seen in Karma of the Destruction Swordsman, Buster Blader was forced to standoff against his once-companion. The warrior tried to calm the dragon, but in the end, he was forced to slay the creature. The artwork of Destruction Swordsman Fusion shows Buster Blader mourning his old friend as the dark energy dissipates and the light returns. Buster Blader is overcome with emotion in Destruction Sword Memories as the memories of his friend seem to be reflected in his sword.
Eternal Bond

Buster Blader did not slay Buster Dragon in anger or retribution, he did it out of love and mercy. This act of love and friendship, dispelled the darkness, and the innocence of the little whelp returned in the form of Protector Whelp of the Destruction Swordsman. The spirit of the whelp bonded with the swordsman, imbuing him with new strength and purpose. United once more, the mighty warrior became Buster Blader, the Dragon Destroyer Swordsman, the legendary fighter, fighting with his eternal friend as seen in Destruction Sword Flash,
The tale of Buster Blader and his precious companion is a sad yet comforting tale about bravery, friendship, loss, and remembrance.
