Toon in for Yugioh!’s wackiest monsters: Toons! Yugioh Toons are a variety of weird and silly characters that feel like they have jumped right out of a TV cartoon! This old monster ability is making an new appearance in the anticipated Revolution Booster: Toon / Witchcrafter / Unchained to be reased in the OCG May 30th 2026. The newest Toon cards have been revealed! Let’s take a look at what a Toon is and how they work!

What is a Toon?

First off, what is a Toon anyway? “Toon” is an old monster ability that first appeared way back in 2002 in the Spell Ruler booster pack. Toon was actually the first ability ever assigned to an effect monster (Flip monsters came first, but were not considered to have an ability). These monsters are share the Toon ability and, unlike other abilities, Toon is also treated as an archetype. While Toon cards are no doubt the worst special monsters, there have been many attempts to improve them over the years. Even though these cards seemed extremely powerful when Pegasus used them in the manga and anime, their actual TCG/OCG versions proved to be the opposite. Toons have a several restrictions and drawbacks, and they rely very heavily on the card Toon World, a card that on it’s own is more of detriment than a benefit. Even so, Toons still have a special place in the hearts of many players.

Over time, Toons have changed and gained additional support. As such, Toons have been categorized into classes based on their effects and restrictions. Let’s discuss those classes and see what separates them from each other!

  • Class A
    • These monsters cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. These monsters must first be Special Summoned from the hand by tributing, the number of tributes needed is the same as if it were Tribute Summoned. You can also only do this while you control Toon World. However, one it has been Special Summoned from the hand correctly, you can Special Summon it from the GY or banishment even if you do not control Toon World. Class A Toons cannot attack the turn they are Special Summoned, and you have to pay 500LP to attack. Even so, these monsters can attack your opponent directly if they do not control a Toon, but if they do control a Toon, your Toon must attack your opponent’s Toon. Perhaps the biggest vulnerability is, if your Toon World is destroyed, so is your Class A Toon. These are very vulnerable monsters with several drawbacks. Examples of these Toons are Toon Summoned Skull, Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon, Manga Ryu-Ran, and Toon Mermaid.
  • Class B
  • Class C
    • Class C Toon monsters are a little better than Class A and Class B, but they still have heavy restrictions. If your Toon World is destroyed, so are Class C Toons. These Toons CAN be Normal Summoned or Set, but they cannot Special Summon themselves from the hand and they cannot attack the turn they are summoned. If you control Toon World, these monsters can attack your opponent directly, unless they, too, control a Toon. Toons of this class include Toon Gemini Elf, Toon Masked Sorcerer, Toon Cannon Soldier, and Toon Goblin Attack Force.
  • Class D

Toon Decks

As mentioned, Toons are not good. They have too many restrictions, are too vulnerable, and rely heavily on other vulnerable cards to even be playable. Even so, many different variations of Toon decks have appeared over the years. Most of these Toon decks are built solely around Toons, but the Red-Eyes Toon in particular has actually found its way into some Red-Eyes decks due to it’s naming convention. Toon Table of Contents has been a standout Toon support card that actually ended up being used in certain Exodia builds as a way to essentially make the deck smaller. Table of Contents allows you to add any “Toon” card – including Toon Table of Contents – from your deck to your hand, and it is not limited to once-per turn. This strategy, coupled with similar cards like Thunder Dragon, made Exodia mill decks somewhat consistent. But, Toon deck generally rely solely on Toons and their ability to dominate the board and attack your opponent directly.

Toon Support

Toons have seen several rounds of support cards due to popular demand. Some of the support cards, designed to make Toons less vulnerable, more consistent, and less reliant on Toon World include: Toon Briefcase, Took Bookmark, Toon Kingdom, Comic Hand, Toon Terror, Toon Rollback, Mimicat, Shadow Toon, Toon Page-Flip, Toon Defense, and Toon Mask. Even more new Toon support is on its way, too! In May of 2026, we will see Blue-Eyes Toon Ultimate Dragon, a new Toon field spell, and more Toon support!
