Intro

Yugioh! monsters have many parts and pieces that make up their anatomy. One of those parts is the Level! A monster’s Level is very important, and there are so many mechanics that all revolve around a monster’s Level. Let’s take a look at Yugioh monster levels, how they works, and what they are so important!

Lv. 1-4

One of the fundamental mechanics of Yugioh! is the Normal Summon. A Normal Summon is when you summon a monster from your hand in face-up attack position without the use of a card effect or other special condition. As a rule, you can Normal Summon one monster once per turn baring any other card effects, like Double Summon. You can Normal Summon Level 4 and lower monsters without a Tribute. But, if it is a Level 5 or higher monster, you will need one or more Tributes.

Lv. 5+

Another form of Normal Summon is the Tribute Summon. While a Tribute Summon counts as a Normal Summon, it involves the use of a Tribute. A monster with a Lv. of 5 or 6 requires one Tribute to be Normal Summoned. A monster with a Lv. of 7 or higher requires two Tributes to be Normal Summoned. You can Tribute Summon a monster by sacrificing or Tributing one or more monsters you control that is already on the Field.

Lv. and Power

In the early days of Yugioh!, when a great number of monsters were Normal Monsters, there was more or less a correlation between a monster’s Lv. and it’s power – the higher a monster’s Lv, the more powerful it was. Generally. However, this is not always the case, and is often proven to be the wrong way to measure a monster’s strength. There are many examples of low-level monsters with very powerful effects and high-level monsters with rather lackluster effects.

Card Effects and Lv.

A monster’s Level is also important because there are many cards and effects that interact with monsters of certain Levels and can even alter a monster’s Lv. Some cards that interact with Levels are 4-Starred Ladybug of Doom, Trade-In, Unexpected Dai, Time Passage, Rescue Cat, Revolving Switchyard, Deep Dark Trap Hole, and Bonfire.

Lv. and Extra Deck Monsters

For Synchro Monsters, Lv. is everything! Synchro Summoning involves using monsters on the Field with Levels that add up to the Lv. of the Synchro Monster – including a Tuner! Xyz Summoning is also tied directly to monster Levels. To Xyz Summon, you need monsters on the Field with the same Levels. An important note on Xyz Monsters: Xyz Monsters do not have a Lv., but rather a Rank. This means that an Xyz Monster is unaffected by any card effect that interacts with Lv. Likewise, a Link Monster has a Link Rating, not a Lv.

Always remember the importance of a monster’s Level!
