When it comes to Flip Effect monsters in Yugioh!, few cards are as iconic (or creepy!) as the Jars. These seemingly weak monsters with bulging, cyclopic eyes and toothy, wicked grins have actually been some of the most powerful cards in the game! Despite their diminutive stature and “playful” expressions, these monsters have done their fair share of time on the banlist. So, let’s take a look at the Yugioh Jar monsters and see what they can do!
Morphing Jar 1 & 2

While the Jar monsters could be called an archetype, they do not necessarily interact with each other like typical archetypal cards. All of the Jar monsters have their own unique effects – though similar in design – and they are often used together. Of the various Jars, two of the most recognizable ones are Morphing Jar and Morphing Jar #2. Morphing Jar has been a staple card for Deck Out strategies since it’s release in 1999 (OCG). This card forces both players to discard their entire hands and draw 5 new cards. This effect is not limited to once-per-turn either. So, one of the most popular ways to use this card was with Book of Tauyou and Book of Moon to proctor the effect of the Jar multiple times in the same turn.
Now, Morphing Jar #2, the close cousin to the previous Jar, is similar to it’s cousin, but has its own unique effect. This card interacts with the Field rather than the hand. Morphing Jar #2 forces both players to shuffle all of their monsters into their Decks, then, both players excavate cards from their deck until they reveal the same amount of monsters whey shuffled. Of those monsters, both players Special Summon all excavated Lv. 4 or lower monsters and send the rest of the cards to the GY. Another useful Deck Out card, and a non-targeting, non-destruction form of card removal.
Other Jars

Another notable Jar is Cyber Jar. This card is very similar to Morphing Jar #2, but its effect destroys monsters rather than shuffled them back into the deck. There is also Greed Jar, a card that lets both players either mill cards from their Deck and add one to their hand, or, mill cards from the Extra Deck. Dice Jar is another strange Jar monster. But, rather than milling cards, this one inflicts effect damage – up to 6000 damage! But, there is a risk that you, yourself take the damage.
Then we have some really weird outliers that call themselves Jars. One of them actually belongs to the Aroma archetype: Aroma Jar. This card is a Flip Monster and is Rock Type like the other Jars, but it is not really a “Jar” and is more like a “jar” since it really doesn’t belong with the other Jars. Likewise, Dimension Jar, Cobra Jar, and Jar Turtle deviate from the other Jars in this article. Dimension Jar is a Machine that only lets both players banish cards from each other’s GYs. Cobra Jar is a Reptile that Special Summons a token. And Jar Turtle is a Reptile that has a Jar of Greed as it’s shell. And, perhaps taking the cake: Fiber Jar. Fiber Jar, which has been banned since 2005, is known as the “reset button” of Yugioh! The card literally makes both players shuffle their hands, fields, and GYs back into their deck, then draw 5 cards and keep playing.
