This isn’t Chuck E. Cheese or Freddy’s, this is Yugioh! Tokens in Yugioh! are not special coins for the arcade, they are a unique type monster that has its own unique rulings and nuances. While tokens are not a major part of the game, they are important, and understanding how they work is essential. Let’s take a look at what Yugioh tokens are and how they function!
What is a Token?

So, what exactly is a token? A token is unique kind of monster that is Special Summoned via a card effect that, in a way, acts as a monster card substitute. These monsters are not actually cards in your deck, and they do not count as cards for deck, Extra Deck, or Side Deck limitations. Although, token cards have been printed, you do not put them in your physical deck. You can use generic token cards to represent a token, or you can use the exact token that is specified on the card that summoned it. Some of the most common cards that Special Summon tokens Scapegoat, Multiply, Dandylion, Jam Breeding Machine, Cloning, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, and Generaider Boss Stage.
Using a Token
Now, token have some limitations on their use. Many cards that summon tokens have special parameters for their tokens, such as Scapegoat, which specifies that you cannot tribute Sheep Tokens for a Tribute Summon. There are also some general rules to using a token that a player should be aware of. For starters, a token cannot exist anywhere except face-up on the Field. It cannot be returned to the Deck, it cannot reside in the Graveyard or Banishment, and it cannot be returned to the hand. But, any card or effect that would require the use of a monster, a token can usually be used. For example, if you active Ballista Squad, you can tribute one of your tokens for cost. However, given their unique limitations, there are some interesting card interactions with tokens.
For example: Evenly Matched. This card forces your opponent to banish face-down cards they control until they control the same number of cards as you. However, if they control a token, they cannot banish it face-down; therefore, the token must be kept on the Field, since a token cannot exist in the banishment zone. In contrast, you CAN banish a token to Special Summon a card like Dark Magician of Destruction. But, how!?! Well, a token cannot reside the banishment zone, but it can be banished for cost. This is possible because banishing is a game action, not a location requirement. When a token is banished (or sent to the GY), it simply disappears and is no longer in play. Evenly Matched requires cards to be moved to the banishment zone face-down. DMoD only requires the action of banishing, not the zone itself.

TOkens as Material
Unless otherwise stated by a card effect, tokens can be tributed. They can also be used a material for a Link, Fusion, or Synchro Summon unless that summon requires its materials to be sent to a specific location. It is important to note that tokens cannot be use as material for an Xyz Summon. Since a token can only reside face-up on the Field, it cannot be attached to an Xyz Monster, since a card attached to an Xyz Monster is technically no longer on the Field, but is now part of that Xyz Monster. Interestingly enough, token can be equipped to other monsters and can reside face-up in your Spell and Trap Zones.
TOken Archetypes
While there many one-off cards that Special Summon tokens or interact with them, there are not many archetypes that solely focus on tokens. However, there are a few that make use of tokens. Like Swordsoul, Mecha Phantom Beast, Adamancipator, Shinobird, T.G., Blackwing, Ice Barrier, Beetrooper, and Black Rose.
