by All Yugioh! monsters have an Attribute. A monster’s Attribute is a key part of its “anatomy.” Many cards and effects are related to a monster’s Attribute. Now, typically a monster can belong to one of six Attributes: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Light, or Dark. But, there is actually a seventh Attribute reserved exclusively for one type of card: The gods! Let’s take a look at Yugioh Divine monsters!
The Egyptian God Cards
Any Yugioh! player knows of the existence of the three Egyptian god cards: Obelisk the Tormentor, The Winged Dragon of Ra, and Slifer the Sky Dragon. These three cards were insanely powerful in the manga and anime. And while their TCG/OCG versions are less powerful, they are still super cool and iconic. And, they are Divine! The Egyptian god cards reside outside the normal six Attributes. They are beyond and above the elemental Attributes that other monsters follow. This sets the gods apart from the other monsters. But, why does this matter?
This is mostly just a stylistic choice for flavor and story. But, there are some times when Divine monsters have an impact on the game. Cards that affect specific Attributes rarely ever affect Divine monsters. Take Clear World for example. This card does not affect Divine monsters at all. And, weirdly enough, since “Divine” is a legal attribute, you can actually declare Divine as an Attribute for cards like DNA Transplant and Swamp Mirrorer.
Other Divine MOnsters
Now, Obelisk, Ra, and Slifer are the Egyptian god cards, but they are not the only Divine monsters in Yugioh! Over the years, additional support cards have been released for the Egyptian god cards, like Ra’s Disciple, and Mound of the Bound Creator. And Ra in particular has been given a lot of support. as such, there are additional forms of Ra that are also Divine: The Winged Dragon of Ra – Sphere Mode, The Winged Dragon of Ra – Immortal Phoenix, and most recently The Winged Dragon of Ra, Sun God of Darkness. But those aren’t the only Divine monsters.
If the Egyptian god cards are above and beyond the elemental monsters, then Holactie the Creator of Light is above and beyond the gods! This card is an instant win card that can only be Special Summoned by tributing all three Egyptian gods that you control on the Field. Talk about power! And what makes this card even more unique, Holactie is the one and only card that has the “Creator God” Type, unlike the Divine Beast Type of the Egyptian god cards.
Divine Trivia
- Despite the Egyptian god cards having legal, playable card version, the “Divine” Attribute was not officially added to the game until 2008.
- In the original Japanese anime, the Egyptian gods did not have visible Attributes.
- The Divine Attribute symbol has the same background as the Light Attribute.
- The Japanese anime shows the Norse God and Wicked God cards with Divine Attributes, but the dub shows them with their TCG Attributes.
- In Yu-Gi-Oh! BAM, the Sacred Beasts are given the Divine Attribute.
