Non all Yugioh! monsters have effects. In fact, some of the most iconic, classic cards are Normal monsters like Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and Gaia the Fierce Knight. But, Normal monsters are not the only monsters without effects. There are also non effect Yugioh monsters, which are similar, but different. Let’s explore!

Vanilla with Sprinkles
If a Normal monster is vanilla, then a non effect monster is vanilla with sprinkles. They are practically the same thing, but with a little extra. A Normal, or vanilla, monster is a Main Deck monster that has no effect. A Normal monster can be Normal Summoned or Set. Look at Mekk-Knight Avram or Summoned Skull. These monsters can be Normal Summoned, Set, or Tribute Summoned – a form of Normal Summon. You can even see their designation as “Normal” in their textbox right next to their Type. Non effect monsters on the other hand are a little different.
Hot Dog with Ketchup
A non effect monster is like a Normal monster but with more steps, like a hot dog with ketchup. For one, a non effect monster cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. These monsters are Extra Deck monsters or Ritual Monsters that have no effect. They are not “Normal” monsters because they cannot be Normal Summoned, but they are similar to Normal monsters in that they have no effect. Look at Gem-Knight Pearl, Hungry Burger, or Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon. You will notice that these monsters do not have “Normal” as a designation. Non effect monsters must be Special Summoned, thus they are not Normal, but they have no effect. But, why is this important?
Nachos without Cheese

Now, while old-school Yugioh! was teeming with Normal and non effect monster, that is not the case with modern Yugioh! You will almost never see these monsters used. Still, they are used from time to time. One of the most important things to keep in mind is, even though non effect monsters have no effect, they are not Normal Monsters. So, any card that would interact with a Normal Monster, like Order to Charge or Painful Decision will not work on a non effect monster. And there is a lot of support for Normal monsters, but not really any direct support for non effect monsters. They are like nachos without cheese.
Modern Archetypes
There are some archetypes thar use non effect monsters like, Gem-Knight, Tenyi, and Gaia. But these are few and far between. However, there are some very recent archetypes that make use of non effect monsters. One of the most standout archetypes to do this is Zenet, a Zombie Ritual archetypes that can easily bring out huge non effect monsters from the Extra Deck like Meteor Black Dragon. And, interestingly enough, even Blitzclique can make use of non effect monsters. Many of the Blitzclique cards restrict you from summoning effect monsters from your Extra Deck. But, that does not apply to non effect monsters! Overall, non effect monsters just don’t see play anymore. But, you never know!
