What is Genesys Format?
Genesys is the newest Yugioh! format. It focuses on creative deck building, a limited Extra Deck, and strategic gameplay. What makes Genesys standout from other Yugioh! formats is it’s use of a point system rather than a ban list. Instead of a traditional ban list, Genesys assigns a point value to every card, and you can only have a set number of points for your deck. The standard point maximum is 100, but any tournament can alter that cap. With no ban list, this means you can play cards like Pot of Greed, but it will cost you! One copy of Pot of Greed will run you 30 points. That means, if you run three copies, you are already at 90 points out of 100! You will have to get creative when choosing which cards to run, and which ones to cut. But, don’t worry too much, most all cards are 0 points, so you still have a ton of flexibility when it comes to building a deck.
Genesys Decks
In addition to using a point system instead of a ban list, Genesys does not allow the use of Link or Pendulum Monsters. This can limit some decks, but it can also level the playing field. This change makes building an Extra Deck a little more challenging, but it also adds a fun twist to the game. While some Link or Pendulum-based archetypes suffer in this format, there are still tons of different decks that can be played. Exosister, Radiant Typhoon, Super Quant, Odion, Ghoti, HERO, P.U.N.K. and many more decks are popular choices that perform well in this format.
