Fusion Monsters and Fusion Summoning has been a part of the game since its early days, and the mechanic is still going strong! With so many cool and powerful monsters and Fusion-based archetypes, this mechanic has so many different variations! One of the most popular innovations in Fusion Summoning is the Contact Fusion. But, what is Contact Fusion? Let’s explore together!
How to Contact Fusion

A Contact Fusion is much different from the usual Fusion Summon. Generally, to perform a Fusion Summon, you have to use the Spell Card Polymerization or a similar card effect like Super Polymerization, Shadoll Fusion, or Soprano the Melodious Songstress. These are all effects that count as a Fusion Summon. A Contact Fusion, however, does not involve the use of a a Fusion Spell or effect; rather, it is done by using the effect of the Fusion Monster itself. Let’s look at Elemental HERO Dark Neos as an example. Dark Neos is a Fusion of “Elemental HERO Neos” + “Neo-Spacian Dark Panther“. The first part of Dark Neos’ effect reads: “Must first be Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by shuffling the above cards you control into the Deck.” Dark Neos has an effect that allows it to summon itself from your Extra Deck by shuffling the material you control back into the deck! No Polymerization needed! THIS is what Contact Fusion is all about.
Contact Fusion Overview
There are some other rules and regulations surrounding Contact Fusions. First: a Contact Fusion does NOT count as a Fusion Summon. It is a type of Special Summon that occurs via the Fusion Monster’s own effect. Kind of like a Synchro or Xyz Summon. A contact Fusion does not start a chain like a Fusion Summon does. Also, when performing a Contact Fusion, all of the material used must be the correct ones, no substitutes like King of the Swamp are allowed. In general, the materials used in a Contact Fusion must all be on your Field, but this is not always the case.
Contact Fusion Popularity
Contact Fusion is a very popular form of Fusion Summoning among players – and characters in the Yugioh! anime and manga! The first time a Contact Fusion was perform was in the manga when Valkyrion the Magna Warrior was summoned using this method (this card is not a Fusion Monster in the OCG/TCG). This was not known as a Contact Fusion at this time. It would not be until Yu-Gi-Oh! GX that the term “Contact Fusion” was used. “Contact Fusion” was used to describe the way the Elemental HERO Fusion Monsters were summoned, and it’s actually depicted in the artwork of Miracle Contact. The term “Contact Fusion” stuck, and was later applied to the Gladiator Beasts Fusion mechanic as well. Even though “Contact Fusion” is not an official term in the Yu-Gi-Oh! rulebook, it has made its way into the player lexicon, much like “garnet” and “towers.”
This predecessor of Synchro, Xyz, and Link Summoning is hugely popular, as it requires of fewer resources and set-up than ordinary Fusion Summons. And it has some extra anime flavor and flash!
