The newest Yu-Gi-Oh! format is here: Genesys! And Dueling Nexus has everything you need to get started! Let’s take a look at what makes Yu-Gi-Oh! Genesys different from other formats of the game.

Genesys takes duelists back in time before Link and Pendulum mechanics existed. That’s right, in Genesys, players cannot use Link or Pendulum Monsters. That’s the first difference. The Field looks different, too. There are no Pendulum Zones in the Spell and Trap area, and there are no Extra Monster Zones, just like classic Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Another feature that separates Genesys from other formats is the Forbidden & Limited Cards list. There isn’t one! (Except for Link and Pendulum Monsters) Duelists can still only run a maximum of 3 cards of the same name in their decks, but the standard Forbidden & Limited Card list does not apply for Genesys format. That means players can use cards like Pot of Greed, Cyber-Stein, and Harpie’s Feather Duster without any restrictions! Well… there is a small catch.

Genesys uses a point system for deck building instead of a forbidden and limited list. Each card has its own point value, and duelists have to choose carefully which cards to use, and which ones to cut. Most cards have zero points, but some can cost up to 100 points!

The standard point cap for Genesys is 100. That’s a lot of points to work with, but they can disappear quickly as you build your deck, so watch out! And remember, this 100 point cap is for the Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck combined. For example: Branded Fusion is 40 points, Pot of Greed is 30 points, and Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring is 15 points. If a player runs one copy of Branded Fusion, one copy of Pot of Greed, and two copies of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, that’s 100 points! And who only uses two copies of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring? If you want a third copy of that card, you would have to drop one of the others. And if you want to run three copies of Pot of Greed, that will cost you 90 of your 100 points. Other cards like Catapult Turtle or Skill Drain  cost 100 points – that leaves you with no points to spare! Choose your cards wisely!
