Introduction
One of the most important and sometimes misunderstood mechanics of Yugioh! is a little something called Spell Speed. But, what is Spell Speed? What does it mean and how does it work? Let’s examine this essential part of the game together!

Spell Speed is a function, mechanic, or concept that streamlines how “fast” or at what “speed” cards and effects resolve after activation. The idea of Spell Speed dictates the order in which effects resolve and what kinds of effects can be activated in response to other effects. This is most obvious when examining Chains. When a Chain in started, only certain other cards can be activated in response. As an example, if I activate the Normal Spell card Card Destruction, my opponent cannot activate Pot of Desires in response. These cards are both the same Spell Speed: Spell Speed 1. How many levels of Spell Speed are there? Three! Let’s take a look!
Spell Speed 1
In the example mentioned above, those two cards are both Spell Speed 1. The main rule to Spell Speed is that only cards with the same Spell Speed or higher can be activated in response to another card or effect activation. This does not, however, apply to Spell Speed 1. Spell Speed 1 cards cannot be activated in response to other Spell Speed 1 cards. The only time this occurs is when two Spell Speed 1 effects happen simultaneously. Example: Two Giant Rats battle and are each sent to the GY. Their effects both trigger at the same time. Types of Spell Speed 1 cards include: Normal Spells, Equip Spells, Continuous Spells, Field Spells, Ritual Spells, Flip Effects (Magician of Faith), Trigger Effects (Sangan), Trigger-like Effect (Psi-Station), Ignition Effects (Cyber Gymnast), and Ignition-like effects (Valhalla, Hall of the Fallen).
Spell Speed 2
The next step up in Spell Speed are Spell Speed 2 cards and effects. These cards can be activated in response to Spell Speed 1 and Spell Speed 2 cards, but not in response o Spell Speed 3 cards. Spell Speed 2 cards include Quick Play Spells, Quick Play monster effects and monster effects that can occur “during either player’s turn,” Normal Trap Cards, Continuous Trap Cards, and Quick-like cards and effects. These cards can be activated in response to other cards, but can also often start chains themselves.

Spell Speed 3
The “fastest” cards in the game go to Spell Speed 3 cards. So far, the only cards in this category are Counter Trap Cards. This is what makes Counter Traps so deadly. The only cards that can respond to Spell Speed 3 cards are other Spell Speed 3 cards. As such, these cards are usually the final effects of a Chain and are the first to resolve.
