What is a Towers?

In Yu-Gi-Oh! there are all kinds of monsters and effects that become engrained in our hearts and minds, for better or for worse! Some cards become so legendary that they earn their own nickname that then gets passed down to other cards that share the same type of effect. “Towers” is one of those cads! But, what is a Towers or Tower monster anyway? Well, it all goes back to Apoqliphort Towers. A beefy Lv. 10 monster that is unaffected by Spell and Trap effects and all activated monster effects of monsters with a lower Lv. than itself. The key here is the word “unaffected.” That’s what makes a Towers a Towers!

Towers MOnsters

Towers monsters are boss monsters that are often very difficult to defeat. They are unaffected by card effects, making it impossible to destroy these monsters with cards like Mirror Force or Lightning Storm or remove them with cards like Compulsory Evacuation Device. These cards simply do not work against a Towers. Neither do monster effects like Caius the Shadow Monarch or Gandora the Dragon of Destruction. While Apoqliphort Towers is not the first monster to have an effect that makes it unaffected by other card effects, it is perhaps one of the easiest of these monsters to summon, even though it seems costly on the surface.

Apoqliphort Towers

Apoqliphort Towers was a particularly difficult monster for players to out when it was released in 2014. While the monster requires 3 in-archetype monsters as tributes to summon it, it turned out to be worth it. Not many decks at the time had a way to deal with this monster, and so, players who chose to run this card could essentially win games just by showing up. However, there was an answer: Kaijus. Yes, the infamous mega monsters like Gameciel the Sea Turtle Kaiju that allow players to tribute their opponent’s monsters to summon them to your opponent’s field. Since tributing is a game mechanic and not a card effect, this was one of the only solutions to outing Towers. Players still to this day keep Kaijus in their Side Deck just in case.

Other Towers Monsters

Apoqliphort Towers was not the first of its kind, and it wasn’t the last, either! Even though this card was banned for some time, more monsters were released after it with the “unaffected” word printed in their effect, an effect that became an infamous monster moniker. So, the next time you hear someone mention a “Towers” monster, remember where this name came from! Below are some additional Yugioh Towers monsters.

The above list not exhaustive, and some of the cards listed may not be considered “true” towers, but they are all monsters that pose a unique challenge for removal and offer some form of an “unaffected” effect that makes these cards very powerful and difficult to work around.
